The French Department at Ysgol Dyffryn Taf is an innovative and well resourced Department. Our teachers are experienced, dedicated and hard working.
The French Department at Dyffryn Taf is committed to ensuring that every student achieve their true potential. We aim to provide learners with a rewarding experience to language learning and to develop their confidence to communicate in French. French is a popular subject at Ysgol Dyffryn Taf with students at all levels of ability and has a proven track record of excellent examination results at both KS4 and KS5.

What course will I be following?
GCSE French (WJEC)
What kinds of things will I study?
The GCSE course content will broadly cover three themes:
Identity and culture
- Youth culture: self and relationships, technology and social media
- Lifestyle: health and fitness, entertainment and leisure
- Customs and traditions: food and drink, festivals and celebrations
Wales and the world (areas of interest)
- Home and locality: local areas of interest, travel and transport
- The wider world: local and regional features of French – speaking countries, holidays and tourism
- Global sustainability: environment, social issues
Current and future study and employment
- Current study: school/college life, studies
- Enterprise, employability and future plans: employment, skills and personal qualities
- Post – 16 study, career plans
How will my work be assessed?
Component 1: Speaking - 25% of your final grade
Component 2: Listening - 25% of your final grade
Component 3: Reading - 25% of your final grade
Component 4: Writing - 25% of your final grade
How can I progress my learning in this subject after Year 11 and is this the course for me?
A GCSE qualification in French will considerably broaden the scope of job opportunities and can be combined successfully with many other subjects at A Level and at University.
The study and experience of French will also increase your skill set for life – it develops skills in clear communication, problem-solving, considering ideas from another culture’s point of view, translation, active and fine listening skills and the ability to think quickly. In addition, it enhances your knowledge of English and will boost your literacy skills.
You can further develop your French language skills by studying French at A-Level here at the Sixth Form at Dyffryn Taf.
There are then opportunities to study the subject at University which could then present career opportunities in professions such as: Teaching, translating, interpreting, business services, community services, finance, tourism, public administration, education, sporting careers, journalism, accountancy, hospitality industry, sales and marketing, law, medicine, acting, TV and radio presenting, manufacturing, diplomatic services, police force, European Union, government and many more.
