Sociology A level (E-sgol)
Sociology is the study of society - how people interact in groups. A level Sociology examines social behaviour from a variety of perspectives: how it originates and then develops, and the ways people are organised into groups according to distinctions such as class, gender and race.
It also looks at the institutions and forces which shape and are shaped by groups within a society, such as the media, religion and education. A level Sociology focusses on contemporary society, providing an awareness of the importance of social structure and actions in explaining social forces and issues.
How will I be assessed? (Assessment)
Unit 1: Acquiring Culture - Written Examination: 1 ¼ hrs, 15% of overall qualification.
Unit 2: Understanding Society and Methods of Sociological Enquiry - Written Examination: 2hrs, 25% of overall qualification.
What kind of work will I do outside lessons?
E-sgol students learn to work independently and responsibly, attending lessons online and submitting electronic assignments. This developes transferable skills that are highly valued by employers and universities.
What could I go on to do at the end of my course? (Progression)
Learners studying the WJEC AS/A Sociology qualification will have the opportunity to develop a wide range of essential skills required for higher education and employment. This specification provides a suitable foundation for the study of sociology or a related area through a range of higher education courses, progression to the next level of vocational qualifications or employment.
