Religious Studies A level
This WJEC GCE AS and A level specification in Religious Studies will enable learners to:
Develop their interest in a rigorous study of religion and belief and relate it to the wider world
- Develop knowledge and understanding appropriate to a specialist study of religion
- Develop an understanding and appreciation of religious thought and its contribution to individuals, communities and societies.
- Adopt an enquiring, critical and reflective approach to the study of religion
- Reflect on and develop their own values, opinions and attitudes in the light of their studies.
How will I be assessed? (Assessment)
AS Unit 1: An Introduction to the Study of Religion. Written examination: 1 hour 15 mins 15% of qualification. This unit offers the choice of the study of one religion from a choice of six: Option A: Option B: Option C: Option D: Option E: Option F: Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Buddhism, Hinduism and Sikhism. We study Hinduism.
AS Unit 2: An Introduction to Religion and Ethics and the Philosophy of Religion. Written examination: 1 hour 45 mins 25% of qualification.
A2 Unit 3: A Study of Religion. Written examination: 1 hour 30 mins 20% of qualification. This unit offers the choice of the study of one religion from a choice of six: Option A: Option B: Option C: Option D: Option E: Option F: Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Buddhism, Hinduism, Sikhism. We study Hinduism.
A2 Unit 4: Religion and Ethics. Written examination: 1 hour 30 mins 20% of qualification. This unit provides learners with the opportunity to undertake an in-depth and broad study of four fundamental ethical themes: ethical thought (part 2), deontological ethics, determinism and freewill.
A2 Unit 5: Philosophy of Religion. Written examination: 1 hour 30 mins 20% of qualification. This unit provides learners with the opportunity to undertake an in-depth and broad study of four fundamental philosophical themes.
What kind of work will I do outside the classroom?
Extra reading and discussion. The course develops and enhances critical thinking skills.
What could I do at the end of my course? (Progressions)
This specification provides a suitable foundation for the study of Religious Studies or a related area through a range of higher education courses, progression to the next level of vocational qualifications or employment.
Entry Requirements: GCSE English C, Maths C + portfolio of other qualifications, RE preferred.
